India Target T20I Clean Sweep as Afghanistan Search for a Consolation Win

India will look to complete a 3-0 T20I series sweep when they face Afghanistan in the final match in Delhi on Thursday, while the visitors will be searching for a much-needed victory after two comprehensive defeats.

India have won the opening two matches by seven wickets, chasing down targets of 157 and 160 with considerable ease. Afghanistan have shown glimpses of resistance, but their inability to build competitive totals has left them with little room to challenge India's batting depth.

The third T20I is therefore a dead rubber from a series perspective, but both teams have plenty to gain. Afghanistan need answers after repeatedly losing momentum with the bat, while India could use the match to give opportunities to players who have spent time on the bench ahead of the Asian Games in Japan.

India Have Dominated T20Is at Home

India's recent record in home T20Is underlines the scale of Afghanistan's challenge.

Since July 2024, India have won 23 of their 27 T20Is on home soil. That run includes their successful T20 World Cup campaign as well as victories in every bilateral T20I series played in India during this period.

Their current series against Afghanistan has followed a similar pattern.

India's batting has been aggressive from the outset, while the bowling attack has looked increasingly balanced following the returns of Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh.

Abhishek Sharma set the tone in the opening match with a rapid 82, while Sanju Samson produced a match-winning 57 from only 22 deliveries in the second game.

Nitish Kumar Reddy has also provided another useful bowling option, taking three wickets in the second T20I and further strengthening India's overall combination.

Afghanistan's Top Order Remains the Biggest Concern

Afghanistan's biggest problem throughout the series has been their batting in the Powerplay.

They have either lost several wickets early or consumed too many dot balls, forcing the middle and lower order to spend the rest of the innings trying to recover.

Azmatullah Omarzai rescued Afghanistan after they slipped to 43 for 5 in the first match, scoring 64 to keep the innings alive. In the second game, Ibrahim Zadran contributed 37 before Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan provided late acceleration to take Afghanistan to 159.

However, neither total was enough to seriously test India's chase.

Afghanistan coach Richard Pybus acknowledged after the second defeat that his side needed to reach a considerably higher total, suggesting that around 200 would have given the bowlers a more realistic opportunity.

The team will now need one of its top-order batters to play a long innings if Afghanistan are to avoid another collapse.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz will be particularly keen to respond after being dismissed for ducks in both matches. Pybus backed the opener to make an impact in the final game, pointing to his usual ability to provide explosive starts.

Afghanistan May Need to Spread Experience Through the Batting Order

One potential solution for Afghanistan is to distribute their experienced players more effectively.

Omarzai, Nabi and Rashid have repeatedly been asked to rescue the innings after early wickets. Giving some of that experience greater responsibility earlier in the order could help prevent the kind of collapses that have put Afghanistan under pressure.

Their bowling has been more competitive in the second match, but India's aggressive batting has also exposed Afghanistan's reliance on spin.

Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad and the rest of Afghanistan's spin attack have struggled to create sustained pressure against India's in-form batters, who have repeatedly attacked the spinners when opportunities have appeared.

An additional seamer could therefore be considered for the final match.

India Could Make Changes Ahead of the Asian Games

With the series already secured, India captain Shreyas Iyer has indicated that the final match could provide an opportunity for players who have been waiting for their chance.

The Indian team is due to travel to Japan for the Asian Games, where they will look to defend their gold medal. Giving fringe players valuable match time could therefore be part of India's planning.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is one player who could receive an opportunity, while India could also consider strengthening the bowling department by adding another seamer or allrounder.

The absence of Varun Chakaravarthy, who was ruled out of the series with a side strain before the second T20I, has already forced India to adjust their original plans.

Ravi Bishnoi has stepped into the attack, while Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh remain key components of India's bowling unit.

Key Match-Ups

Abhishek Sharma has an interesting record against Rashid Khan. Although Rashid has dismissed him twice in six T20 innings, Abhishek has attacked the legspinner at a strike rate of 237.77.

Rashid has enjoyed a more favourable battle against Shreyas Iyer, dismissing the Indian captain three times. Iyer has scored at a strike rate of only 120 against him.

At the other end, Afghanistan opener Gurbaz faces another difficult challenge against India's new-ball attack. He has a strike rate of just 37.50 against Bumrah and 114.28 against Arshdeep, with both bowlers having dismissed him for ducks in his last two innings.

India Have Little to Prove, Afghanistan Need a Response

The final match gives India an opportunity to experiment without putting their series result at risk.

The management can assess players who have not featured regularly, while the established members of the squad can continue building momentum before the Asian Games.

Afghanistan, however, need a performance that provides evidence of progress.

Ibrahim Zadran has already admitted that the side must show greater intent with the bat. Their ability to move from totals around 150-160 towards 200 will be crucial if they are to challenge stronger opponents consistently.

The third match may no longer determine the series winner, but it could provide Afghanistan with an important opportunity to identify what needs to change, while India look to finish another home assignment with a clean sweep.
