Dhruv Jurel’s Century Puts India in Command as Sri Lanka Lose Two Early Wickets
India strengthened their grip on the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo after an impressive Day 2, with Dhruv Jurel’s unbeaten 115 helping the visitors declare at 503/9 before Sri Lanka slipped to 8/2 in fading light.

The result of the opening Test at Galle had already given India a 1-0 series lead, and their dominant performance in Colombo has put them in an excellent position to complete a series sweep. Jurel’s patient century was the centerpiece of India’s second day, while Rishabh Pant added another attacking contribution on his return after retiring hurt on the opening day.
Jurel and Pant Extend India’s Dominance
India resumed Day 2 at 300/5, already in a strong position after Devdutt Padikkal’s century had laid the foundation.
Sri Lanka struck early when Asitha Fernando used the short ball effectively to dismiss Saransh Jain, but the breakthrough brought Pant back to the crease.
Pant had retired hurt after being struck on the forearm on the first day, but showed little sign of discomfort when he returned. True to his aggressive style, he immediately attacked the Sri Lankan bowling.
One of the highlights was a huge 95-metre six over fine leg, which even damaged a solar panel. Pant continued to find boundaries before reaching his half-century from 81 balls.
At the other end, Jurel played a very different role.
While Pant attacked, Jurel accumulated runs with patience and control, allowing India to maintain a steady scoring rate without taking unnecessary risks.
The pair added 112 runs, taking India beyond the 400-run mark before Sri Lanka finally found a breakthrough.
Pant was dismissed for 63 off 89 balls, including six fours and two sixes, when he attempted to attack off-spinner Keshara Nuwantha immediately after lunch.
Dhruv Jurel’s Calm Route to a Second Test Century
With Pant gone, Jurel took responsibility for India's lower-order batting.
His approach was markedly different from Pant's. Rather than dominating the bowlers with constant attacking shots, Jurel relied on sound technique, patience and quick running between the wickets.
He reached his half-century from 97 balls and gradually moved towards his second Test century.
Jurel's ability to accumulate runs without appearing rushed became one of the defining features of his innings. He maintained a high control percentage and rarely appeared to force the scoring opportunities.
As India's recognised batters disappeared, Jurel also began farming the strike and protecting the tailenders.
The pressure increased when he reached 99. For several deliveries, Sri Lanka tightened their lines and fields, forcing Jurel to wait for his opportunity.
Eventually, he found the gap at mid-off and completed his century with a risky single.
Jurel had spent almost five hours at the crease, facing 177 deliveries and hitting nine fours and two sixes.
His century also carried personal significance. After reaching three figures, he revealed the tattoo on his bicep featuring the phrase “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan”, reflecting his family background and the values he has spoken about.
Jurel’s Partnership with Pant Shows India’s Batting Depth
Jurel's innings also highlighted the contrast between India's two wicketkeeper-batters.
Pant's aggressive approach constantly put Sri Lanka under pressure, while Jurel quietly accumulated runs at the other end.
That combination worked particularly well in Colombo.
Jurel has often had to operate in Pant's shadow since breaking into India's Test setup. However, his performances when given opportunities have established him as a reliable batter in his own right.
His second Test century was another indication that India possess significant depth in their batting lineup.
Rather than trying to replicate Pant's aggressive style, Jurel has developed a method based on efficiency, patience and shot selection.
That proved particularly valuable once India moved into the lower order.
India Declare on 503/9
After Jurel completed his century, he immediately shifted gears.
He smashed a six over long-on and followed it with another aggressive stroke as India pushed beyond the 500-run mark.
Prasidh Krishna contributed a boundary before captain Shubman Gill declared at 503/9.
Jurel remained unbeaten on 115, having faced 177 balls.
For Sri Lanka, Asitha Fernando was the standout bowler, finishing with 4/106, but the hosts were unable to prevent India from building an enormous first-innings total.
India's score also gave them a lead of 495 runs by the end of the day.
Sri Lanka Collapse Under Late Pressure
Sri Lanka's response could hardly have started worse.
Only two balls into their innings, rain interrupted play again, but the delay did little to change India's momentum.
When play resumed, Prasidh Krishna immediately made an impact.
He produced a delivery that straightened after pitching and found Lahiru Udara's outside edge, with Yashasvi Jaiswal completing an excellent diving catch at third slip.
Manav Suthar then added another blow, trapping nightwatchman Prabath Jayasuriya lbw.
Sri Lanka ended the day at just 8/2, leaving India with a massive 495-run lead.
Only 58 overs were possible during the day because of rain and poor weather conditions, but India still managed to make significant progress towards victory.

At the end of Day 2, the situation was heavily tilted in India's favour.
