BCCI Clarifies Ajit Agarkar’s Absence from Review Meeting Amid Speculation
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has moved to clarify the absence of senior men's chief selector Ajit Agarkar from a high-profile review meeting in Mumbai, insisting that there was no discussion about his position or any changes to the selection committee.
Agarkar's absence from Thursday's meeting attracted considerable attention, particularly because the gathering focused on India's recent performances and preparations for a busy international calendar leading up to the 2027 ODI World Cup.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said Agarkar was simply out of station when the meeting was called at short notice and was unable to participate virtually because of poor connectivity.
“Today, he was out of station, so he could not be a part of the meeting. The meeting was called at very short notice, and our chairman of the selection committee, Ajit, was not in town. So he could not join the meeting, and he was in an area where he could not join online either, despite our best efforts,” Saikia told reporters.
The explanation came after speculation began circulating on social media regarding Agarkar's future as chairman of the senior men's selection committee.
BCCI Rejects Speculation Over Agarkar’s Future
Agarkar's absence became particularly noticeable because he had recently participated in an online selection committee meeting to finalise India's T20I squad for the three-match series against Afghanistan.
However, Saikia firmly rejected suggestions that Thursday's meeting was connected to Agarkar's position or the future of the selection committee.
“There was no such discussion on this in today's meeting. I do not comment on new rumours. We did not have any such discussions, nor did we have such intentions,” the BCCI secretary said.
He also urged against reading too much into Agarkar's absence, making it clear that the meeting was not a selection committee gathering.
“Today, we did not have any selection meeting. There was no such discussion in today's meeting,” Saikia added.
Despite the clarification, Agarkar's absence continued to generate curiosity, with speculation partly fuelled by questions that have surrounded the selection process in recent months.
Agarkar is currently expected to continue in his role, with his present term understood to run until July next year. There has also been speculation that he could remain involved beyond that period, potentially through the 2027 ODI World Cup, although such an extension has not been confirmed.
No Discussion on a New Director of Cricket
Saikia also dismissed reports that the BCCI was considering appointing a director of cricket for the Indian men's team.
According to the secretary, the review meeting was primarily concerned with India's recent performances and the team's preparation for the demanding schedule ahead.
The discussions included India's tours of England and Ireland, the recently completed Test series in Sri Lanka and the team's plans for the international assignments leading into the 2027 ODI World Cup.
“There was no discussion on the selection committee. Our whole focus was on performances in England and Ireland, as well as the recent Test series in Sri Lanka and what we are going to do in the upcoming series before the ODI World Cup, which is our ultimate goal,” Saikia explained.
He further stressed that the meeting did not involve decisions regarding individual players or format-specific combinations.
“We have not discussed all these things regarding the team selection, team combination, who will be playing in what format. For that, selectors will take a call,” he said.
Selectors Will Decide Future Squads
Saikia explained that future squad selections will remain the responsibility of the selection committee when the relevant meetings are held.
The selectors are expected to assess player performances, fitness, format requirements and other relevant factors when choosing India's squads for upcoming assignments.
“When the selectors meet to select the team for the West Indies series, as well as thereafter for the New Zealand series, they will consider whatever parameters are to be considered by them,” Saikia said.
This distinction was important because Thursday's meeting involved a broader review of India's performances rather than the formal selection of squads.
The BCCI therefore sought to separate the review process from the selection committee's responsibilities.
Agarkar Expected to Return to the Spotlight
Although Agarkar was absent from Thursday's meeting, he is expected to return to his regular duties soon.
He is reportedly expected to attend the Duleep Trophy final beginning September 6, where members of the selection committee will monitor domestic performances ahead of India's upcoming international assignments.
The chief selector was also a prominent presence during India's recently completed Test series in Sri Lanka, making his absence from the Mumbai meeting particularly noticeable.
For now, however, the BCCI's position remains clear: there was no decision concerning Agarkar's future at Thursday's meeting.
India Faces a Busy Road to the 2027 World Cup
India's attention will soon shift back to the field as the team enters a packed period of international cricket.
The immediate assignment is a three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, followed by the Asian Games in Japan later in September.
India will then host the West Indies for three ODIs and five T20Is before travelling to New Zealand for a demanding multi-format tour featuring two Tests, five ODIs and five T20Is.
Sri Lanka are scheduled to visit India for three ODIs and three T20Is, while Zimbabwe will tour India for a three-match ODI series in January 2027.
The most significant assignment before the 2027 World Cup will be the five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, scheduled from January to March 2027.
With such an extensive schedule ahead, the BCCI's review meetings are expected to remain focused on long-term planning, player management and India's preparation for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
For Agarkar, the immediate priority will be continuing the work of the selection committee. Despite the speculation generated by his absence, the BCCI has made it clear that no decision regarding his position was taken at Thursday's meeting.
